The music Festival and Competitions of Vocal and piano douets

Locations: St. Petersburg State Cappella, Shostakovich St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic (Glinka Small Hall), Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory (Glazunov Concert Hall)

This chamber music competition gives young artists the opportunity to perform vocal and piano duets along with masters of the operatic scene on the best philharmonic stages of St. Petersburg, as well as take part in master classes from remarkable Russian and foreign pedagogues. Organizer: Irina Bogacheva Public Charitable “Art-Petersburg”, director: Elena Bogachevs, art-director: Irina Sharapova.

The first festival-competition took place at 2003 June.

Irina Sharapova is a Music Director of new unique project Two Centuries of Russian Classical Romance. The project is intended to present the remarkable phenomenon of world culture - Russian classical romance (Art Song, Lied). Classical music lovers around the world will get acquainted with popular and unknown chamber vocal masterpieces of Russian composers from the beginning of XIX - end XX centuries. Now she has recorded three CDs in this project.

The first CD of the Project - Only Masterpieces shows the results of the development of Russian classical chamber vocal music through two centuries, in which the Russian Soul is most fully expressed. This CD is filled with nostalgia for the great past of Russia and with hope for its’ revival .

The is a unique musical team, created by the known Petersburg’s musicians: Alina Boguk, Tatiyana Kostyanaya and Irina Sharapova. The trio is unique by the instruments and by repertoire. The combination of national instruments - Russian domras or Italian mandolins - and a classical piano gives surprising effect [CD, MP3].

Anthology of Russian Classical Romance

Especially noticeable among the concerts of the last years is her unique effort carried out together with her partner baritone Andrei SLAVNY, prize winner of international competitions. It is Anthology of Russian Classical Romance, a cycle of 27 concerts encompassing actually all important vocal pieces of the Russian chamber classics of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Irina Sharapova has great experience of teaching. She conduct master classes, coaching sessions and consultations for pianists, singers and any ensemble musicians. The musicians considerably improve skills during several lessons.

Russian Romance

Russian Romance (Russian Art Song, Lieder) is one of the greatest achievements in world classical music. Russian classical romance as an independent genre appeared at the beginning of the XIX century. The romances were sung with accompaniment by piano or small instrumental ensemble in palace halls and country houses. From their beginning Romances were very popular in Russia. Music and verse for romances were written by amateurs as well as professional musicians and poets. Some Russian composers at the beginning of the XIX century such as Alyabiev, Guriliov, Varlamov have become famous due to their romances, many of which are masterpieces such as “Nightingale,” by Alyabiev, “The Small Bell,” by Gurilov, and “Snow Flies Along the Street” by Varlamov. The special CD of the project “Two centuries of Russian Classical Romance” will be devoted to the vocal works of these composers.

Many romances have been written by such ingenious Russian composers as Glinka, Dargomyzhsky, Balakirev, Mussorgsky, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov. The chamber vocal works of these composers were heard not only in palace halls, but in concert halls as well. Thus, the classical romance became a major component of the works of Russian composers, on the same level with symphonies, operas and ballets.

The XX century has brought new development to the genre of the Russian classical romance. The project “Two Centuries of Russian Classical Romance” will present vocal masterpieces of such ingenious XX century Russian composers as Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich. Fans of classical music also can get acquainted with the remarkable romances of lesser known Russian composers such as Tcherepnin, Shaporin, Scherbatchov, Shebalin etc.

The classical romance not only lives on at the end of the XX century, it occupies a significant place in the works of such contemporary composers such as Sviridov, Gavrilin, Schnittke, Denisov, Gubaydulina, Slonimsky etc. “Two Centuries of Russian Classical Romance” will also contain romances by these composers.
